6,075 Haitian births at Dominican hospitals

Of 37,158 babies born in maternity wards at public hospitals in the first half of the year, 6,075 were born to foreign mothers, of these 98% Haitians, as reported in Diario Libre. Stats of the Ministry of Public Health say that 36,606 babies were born alive and 539 were born dead.

Santo Domingo.- A group of local moguls headed by Juan Bautista Vicini, the brothers Héctor and Samir Rizek, Mícalo Bermúdez and Jose Luis Coripio (Pepín), has bought the 121 year old newspaper Listin Diario for US$38.5 million, seven years after the fraudulent collapse of its owner the bank Intercontinental (Baninter).

Old passports are no longer renewable

The director general of the Passport Office is reminding the public that the old version of the passports will no longer be renewed. The country is a signatory to an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) agreement that now requires all passports to be electronically scanned. Flavia Garcia said that through her letter (DGP/005/10) no more renewals would be issued for the old version of the passport. Garcia told El Nuevo Diario that the older version of the passports are not machine readable and the owners will have to obtain the newer version which complies with the ICAO agreement and its biometric requirements.
